Best of the Summer

This week's "Best of the Summer" feature kicks off the 2019-2020 school year highlighting how St. Edward High School's Faculty and Staff Members spent their summer.

In celebration of their 30th wedding anniversary, Mrs. Cathy Milowicki, Institutional Advancement Database & Donor Relations Manager, and her husband, Chris traveled to Paris and Switzerland this summer. In addition to visiting the Eiffel Tower, The Louvre, the Arc de Triomphe, Notre-Dame, Sacré-Cœur and Versailles, a highlight during their trip to Paris was watching the final stage of the Tour de France. They then travelled by train to Lausanne, Switzerland to visit family and spent time hiking in the Alps, visiting the Olympic Museum and the town of Montreux (famous for its annual jazz festival).

Head Basketball Coach Eric Flannery '90 traveled to Belim, Brazil this summer with the U16 USA Basketball team and helped guide the team to the FIBA Gold medal in June. This was Coach Flannery's third Gold Medal with USA Basketball.

Mrs. Lisa Hardin, Chair of the Department of Language Acquisition, spent many hours volunteering with Cleveland Roots, a local non-profit in the Clark-Fulton neighborhood whose mission is to provide affordable fresh produce, promote healthy living, and cultivate community. Mrs. Hardin helped teach first time gardeners, harvested for local markets, and translated for our gardeners from Central America. Last week, Cleveland Roots launched a farm stand which will be open every Wednesday now through the end of October, from 4:00-7:00 p.m. in their storefront at 3257 W 41st street, Cleveland 44109.

Mrs. Lisa Hirzel, Performing Arts Department faculty, played Rosie (photographed far left) in the Cassidy Theatre production of Mamma Mia! from June 7-23. The show also starred Andy Hoffman '20 and Sean Lavelle '20, Mrs. Hirzel's husband Tim Hirzel '89 and her son Eric Hirzel '18 who played keyboard for the performances.

Mr. Michael Perrins, Director of International Programs, joined Edsmen on trips to the Battlefields of WWI and WWII in England, Belgium and France and the cities of Tokyo, Kyoto, Osaka and Hiroshima in Japan. Mr. Perrins also facilitated St. Ed's Summer Student Exchange programs in Australia, Chile, France and New Zealand.

Science teacher Mr. Kevin Gardella worked as a Research Associate at Cleveland State University studying 2-D Crystallization of Complex Colloidal Particles during Convection Assembly. He was also an Adviser to Adam Caroscio '20 and Sam Baugh '20 on their "Falling Ball Viscometer for Opaque and Non-Newtonian Fluids" project.

Mr. Michael Yako, Theology teacher, spent the summer eating lots of ice cream with his family.

Mr. Anthony Mortimer, Computer Science teacher, traveled to Lebanon with his wife, Lisa for their honeymoon where they visited the Jeita Grotto, the Cedars of God, the Bacchus Temple, and the statue of St. Mary at Harissa.

Mr. Tom Carey, School Counselor and Counseling Department Chair, celebrated his daughter Lolita's wedding as she married her best friend, Joel on August 11, 2019 at Windows on the River.

Campus Minister Ms. Cari White was able to reflect on the incredible beauty of God's creation while on a family vacation to Alaska. Standing on a glacier, surrounded by mountains in Denali National Park, Ms. White was reminded of how important it is to care for our planet. Shortly after, she traveled to St. Joseph's Oratory in Montreal, Canada with Mr. Owen Williams '13, Theology teacher, and Mr. Matt Wallenhorst '05, Associate Dean of Student Life and Leadership, and a number educators from Holy Cross Schools across the country. Together, they were able to reflect on the life and ministry of the Holy Cross brothers, spent time at the tomb of St. Andre and shared stories of living our Holy Cross Identity. "It was an incredible opportunity to reflect and pray and be renewed in our zeal for Holy Cross education," says Ms. White.

English Department Chair Mr. Andrew Allen joined Edsmen to work at Almost Heaven Habitat for Humanity in West Virginia.

Technology Director Mr. Rylan Campbell and his wife welcomed their son, Dean Campbell, future Eagle Class of 2037, born on August 17, 2019.

English teacher Mr. Elliot Zetzer and his wife, Nicole welcomed their first child, Harper June Zetzer, into the world on August 20, 2019.

In June, Ms. Maya Wanner, Film teacher, graduated Magna Cum Laude with a Bachelor of Arts in English and Religion and a concentration in Film/Media from Kalamazoo College and was accompanied by her father Mr. Grant Wanner, School Counselor, her mother Sue Wanner and her brother Seth Wanner '21.

From camping, drive-in movies, pirate shows, Cedar Point rides, beach vacations and lots of wonderful time together, every day of summer 2019 was an adventure for Mrs. Desiree Rodriguez-Gould, Assistant Director of College Counseling, and her family. "It was truly a summer to remember full of sunny days, lots of growth and even more excitement," says Mrs. Gould.
